Heidi Taillefer

Presentation

Heidi Taillefer’s surreal, elegantly baroque paintings are fairy tales for grown-ups, full of fanciful beasts and beings. The Montreal-based artist paints imaginary creatures, like a cat with antiquated mechanical wings that float, contentedly grooming itself as its body unravels and drifts away (“Birth of Venus”); or a gender –bending Marquis de Sade who reclines on a striped silk chaise (“I Put a Spell on You”). It’s the kind of art that some people find disturbing, mistaking the sensual, visceral nature of her work for carnality.
